BIRD HUNTING
We have 50,000 square miles of access free land and water to hunt migratory and upland game birds. There are two major flyways going through the area which is monitored by Ducks Unlimited. We have most species of inland ducks and geese. The last two years have seen an overall increase in populations. Ruffed Grouse, Sharptail Grouse and Spruce Grouse are also on the rise. 1995 saw one of the best years ever for upland birds. The birds have been holding their own since then.
We do have equipment for rent, guides available and can make up package hunts. However, most of our quests bring their own stuff and do their own thing. The duck and goose hunting can be done in the marshy lakes, wild rice lakes, or farmers fields. We also have bait stations to feed the birds. This reduces the damage to the farmers crops. Permission is only needed to hunt on private land of which is about 500 square miles.The rest (49000 sm) is free access. Grouse hunting is done just about anywhere. They are usually seen going to and from duck hunting areas. There are plenty of old trails which provide access to good hunting areas. Hunter Orange is required to be worn while hunting upland birds.
