The first recorded discovery of
gold in Wine Harbour was in 1861. Stories tell of women chancing upon
the precious metal while picking blueberries. They filled their pails
with nuggets and covered them over with berries, to avoid having to
share their newfound wealth. In time, people became curious as to why
the women were picking so many berries. They followed the women to the
fields, and their secret was revealed. Miners took a Nova Scotia record
42,100 ounces of gold until 1942.
Today, the road leading to the Loring property is still named Eureka
Road although no one has panned for gold in the streams for many
years...
