Keep Mower Blade Sharp
This is the time of year when most homeowners are planning to rejuvenate their lawns and schedule their usual grass-cutting chores. The rotary mower is the most popular mower--by far more widely used than the reel type--and how it cuts your lawn can affect the growth, health and appearance of every blade of grass.
Most homeowners seem to take their mower for granted and don't realize that the blade does indeed get dull as a result of hitting an occasional stone or small branch. And with many of the tough lawn grasses like Zoysia and Bahia, the blade dulls even more quickly.
To develop a good lawn where the grass blades are cut--rather than torn, which is what a dull blade will do-- you should start the season with a sharp blade. Of course the blade of all rotary mowers can be sharpened (the best way is on a grindstone, rather than with a file, because the blade is case-hardened). The cost to professionally sharpen (and balance) an existing blade is less than $5.00. But with many of the smaller rotary mowers, you can often buy a new replacement blade for about the same amount of money.
In all instances, removing the existing blade may not be as simple a job as you might think--the nut holding the blade on the motor shaft may be rusted or frozen. What's the best way to unloosen the nut and remove the blade? Spray the nut and shaft tip generously with a lubricant and then use a simple tool called the Blade Buster.
Many homeowners try to loosen the nut by holding the blade with one hand while turning a wrench on the nut with the other hand. This works sometimes, but it can be dangerous. The Blade Buster simplifies the process by clamping to the side of the mower housing while straddling the blade.
By holding the handle with one hand and a wrench with the other, any nut can be unscrewed. blade Buster makes the job safe and easy. Of course, make certain your engine wi ll not kick back by removing the spark plug. Then clamp the tool in place and turn. It works all the time! When replacing the blade, also use the tool to make certain the nut is tight.
