First, the unique design of the trap. Once lured inside through special gates, a yellowjacket, by its own nature, will not be able to find its way out of the trap. 

Second, the natural ingredients used as bait to attract the insects to the trap--namely fruit juice carbohydrates plus the protein of meat or fish. The female "worker" eat only sweet juice. Juice is poured into the bottom of the trap attracting the wasps to forage for protein to take back to the growing brood in the nest. Thus, meat or fish placed on the gates of the trap will work as well.

BAITING THE TRAP - 3 BAIT DESIGN

Unscrew the lid and pour one cup of fruit juice into the trap. Tip the tray slightly to the side while pouring to avoid getting juice on the gates. Replace the lid.

Although any fruit juice will work, excellent results have been obatained using apple juice or sweet cider.

Using a pencil or small stick, insert a small piece of moist, raw fish or meat into each of tow gates. Position the bait in the center of each gate. The open part of the gate should always face upward. The protein bait needs to be fresh and moist to be most effective.

PLACEMENT OF THE TRAP

For outdoor eating areas, place the trap out early, several feet downwind from cooking and eating activities. For longer-term control, place the trap where it will get plenty of morning and afternoon sun. Hang the trap by the string provided or place it on a table or other flat surface.

CLEANING THE TRAP

When there is no free surface of liquid remaining, it is time to clean the trap.  Immerse in water until any live yellowjackets stop moving.  The yellowjacket carcasses make an excellent fertilizer-- consider pouring them onto your garden.  Rinse the trap with warm water and soap
