History

The Carievale Corner Cafe is the oldest original building in Carievale Saskatchewan. It originally started as a one storey building, later to gain a second storey sometime in the late 1800's. The first recorded date of operation was in 1897 as a general store under the Gilliland Brothers, but these men were the third owners of the building. In 1899 Mr. R. G. Gilliland began operating the store on his own. The second storey was used for Oddfellow Lodge meetings and a dance hall, while the first floor held a thriving business. In 1917, 2 pounds of coffee sold for 0.75, and men's patent leather Oxfords were $3.75.

The store stayed in the Gilliland family until it was taken over by T. Roy Young in 1940. Mr. Young then turned the second floor into living quarters for his family. In 1977 Mr. Young sold his stock, and later sold his building to Clarence Hodge who turned it into a museum of household and small articles. Due to ill health, Mr Hodge was forced to sell his collectibles and leave the museum.

In 1994 Donna Gordon who turned it into the Carievale Corner Cafe bought the building. Much of the building has been preserved. The tin ceiling, wooden floor, support posts, and even the vent ducts.

Many Carievale residents have fond memories of this building and Donna strives to keep it as part of the community heritage.

Catering

Catering is fast becoming the most important aspect of the business. With a daughter willing to help, the talent Donna possesses in the kitchen is best used serving larger groups of people than the cafe will accommodate.

Intimate Candle Light Dinners for Two

The intimate dining for two is really catching on. Rather than the expense of driving to the city people are choosing to spend those special evenings in their own homes enjoying a gourmet meal prepared by an expert chef. The wine is poured, the meal served complete with an enchanting dessert. Everything is cleaned up while the couple enjoy their favourite music over coffee and after dinner drinks.

One of our happiest times in this business was a dinner party we put on in the visitor's lounge at a seniors lodge. The grandmother was able to put on a feast for twenty-two of her family. It really made her feel good to have people over and look after them.
