All you need is 1,200 square feet and the willpower to turn it into $1,000,000 a year profit before tax.

The owner runs the business from a 1,200 ft² building on his property (including office.) Manufacturing is NOT DONE ON SITE. The company has 2 larger North American vendors (One machining & one fabrication) that make the specialized parts and several smaller vendors who provide other specialized as well as off-the-shelf parts. These vendors ship the finished parts to the owner's address where he assembles, tests and ships out to his clients. Machining and fabrication documented with drawings and CAD (computer-aided design) programs. Purchaser could use existing vendors or take CAD programs to closer vendor. Could easily be moved anywhere.

  • $83,000 in inventory at cost.
  • $10,000 in testing equipment.
  • Over $200,000 in total R&D (included)

The business currently focuses on selling 2 different machines to the automotive service industry. The company is the exclusive supplier to many of the specialty chains across Canada as well as several in the US. Parts used in conjunction with the machine are an ongoing sale item because those parts wear out and get lost. It uses a national Canadian distributor that sells parts (not equipment) throughout Canada.

Manufacturing sector getting more action at home. Building things locally and enjoying the tax spinoffs is necessary for any industrial base. This means education and college skills taught must meet what employers need.

The real story on manufacturing in Canada and US. How are we really doing. It may be less than the headlines and the self congratulating audience would want you to know. It stinks and our present society does not respect the work that is necessary to bring these industries back. Work would seem to be a dirty word.

Are 3D printers going to take over the manufacturing industry. Maybe!
It is certainly the most responsible approach for much and many of the gadgets we have around the home. If the people with the design can make 5 cents each time you print their product on your computer. WOW - Straight from designer to end user and leave everyone else out of the loop. This is efficiency. Perhaps some designs would require a payment of three or five dollars. Still it is how many not how much that counts in this game.

Manufacturing and Industry news in Canada. Focused view.

Last year these Canadian parts sales accounted for over 12% of the overall company sales. The company currently services the U.S. parts market directly. Securing a National U.S distributor (not aggressively attempted) would double the company's overall sales without any additional equipment sales. Sales and relationships have also been established outside North America through word of mouth; however those markets have not in any way been pursued. The company has also developed 2 different machines they have not yet marketed.

The company has been producing equipment since 1997 and has over the years improved the equipment and secured solid customer relationships. The owner has made over $200,000. in a year and has for several years made over $150,000 per year Normalized Net Income. At these volumes the owner hired staff that came to his home to assist with assembly of the equipment.

With secure customers and distribution in place, the owner no longer pursued new business and preferred slower pace that did not involve staff coming to his home. The company no longer advertises, does not participate in trade shows anymore or put on a big internet presence. The owner no longer needs to make a lot of money and would like to retire and spend more time traveling. Although the business no longer takes a lot of his time, someone does need to be available to ship parts and equipment preventing him from taking long vacations.

If you take a look at this and you don't see yourself making a million dollars a year before taxes. You are the wrong buyer. Leave it for someone else.
